casinos

I ran across
your website and was surprised to see that your organization is in
favor of a smoke-free workplace. I was surprised because I think
the general perception is that if all casinos went smokeless (like
the businesses in CA), that there would be a drop off in business
and dealers would be laid off, and tokes would decrease.
I am not a dealer, but I do spend a lot of time in casinos
and I am bothered that I must be subjected to the health risks of
2nd hand smoke. Despite the documented dangers of this smoke, I
don't ever see the day when casinos will voluntarily ban smoking
from their businesses. I think the only way it will come
about is by passing laws. And in Nevada, this is unlikely as
well, since the legislature feels any harm to the casino industry
will lower tax revenues.
I think the best method of solving this problem may be a
petition drive effort to place on the ballot a measure that would
prohibit smoking in all places of business with no exceptions,
even for bars or casinos. If such a measure could have the backing
of casino workers, then surely the 63%+ of the general population
that do not smoke would support such a measure as well.
Have you ever considered this approach? And, would you have the
resources to get such a measure off the ground? I would be more
than happy to volunteer my time for such a cause. Please let me
know what you think.
Sincerely,
Tom Ski
