After reading through your site we have come to realize a lot of the wrong-doings that are going on at our "beloved" Treasure Chest.  Since we only have 3 local boats and 1 ailing land base, we get a lot of "if you don't like it, leave."  When Harrah's opened it's doors and took a majority of our dealers, we received a memo stating: "We don't stop our employee's from advancing their careers.....etc..."   All we wanted was a thank you for sticking it out, but then the memo continued ...."all of you who stayed, your jester will be considered when it comes time for bids, promotions...etc"... That was a slap in the face.

We are faced with many new problems, namely, a change in sick call policy.  If an illness is more than one day, each and every day is considered a separate sick call, so that if we are out for a week we get five sick calls. The previous policy counted consecutive days of one illness as a single call-in. So, if we are sick for a week we can face possible suspension and/or termination.

At times we are forced to work 6 days or have split days off working 7-8 days before our next day off. We are forced to work overtime, sometimes with only 20 minutes notice, if we are lucky.  They also control our toke rate. When the money goes up they force us to work overtime and six day-weeks to bring our toke rate down. The six-day schedule goes into effect even though there is no business to support it. The only reason given is that, "we are short on dealers or there are too many sick calls on the next shift."

We have been given memos that our seniority doesn't guarantee our shift. Another memo states ..."no one is guaranteed days off, or which shift will be worked........when business conditions warrant". Dealers are forced to work in other departments and still collect our tokes for that day. This dilutes the tip pool to the detriment of all dealers. We have been told that it's an effort to bring in more people, so this policy "helps everyone."

They don't mention that it also benefits the casino because they get non-toke earning labor doing other casino tasks while still earning tokes. In other words they are taking our money to subsidize their payroll.  The list goes on and on.... Can the NFGE help out our small group of dealers in the New Orleans area??? Any advice??????

Signed,
Dealers in need of some major HELP (#36-New Orleans)

NFGE Response:

We are in the midst of organizing Las Vegas casino dealers. When that is accomplished we expect that the work standards and benefits we achieve in our contracts will serve as a model for other casino workers and will eventually filter throughout the industry, from coast to coast.  Keep tuned into our web site.
