For the record I am neither pro nor against organization.
I'm just sitting here on the fence with my little feet dangling
down. My feet are old now so I'm willing to let the majority
rule as I step aside to make way for a new wave of dealers.
I know we need a change. I'm not certain this particular
union is our answer. I do believe everyone has a right to
his or her own opinion though. I have known the particular
dealers I believe you are referring to as 'favor seeking dealers'
for many years. They did not sell out to anyone, they are
just voicing an opinion. I believe it is unfair to hinder
either side from putting out literature.
Either side in this case not being dealer vs. casino but rather
'dealers pro-union' and 'dealers no-union.' I read their
literature with the same open mind I try to maintain as I read all
the others, and I am coming to the conclusion that neither side
knows diddly about the other. Until we see what an actual
union contract looks like we're all just bumping around in the
dark here. I feel like I'm on "Lets Make a Deal"
and I've got to choose door number one, door number two, or door
number three; but I really don't know what's behind any of them!
I was raised pro union with both parents involved
heavily in unions, one in Teamsters and one in Operating
Engineers. It worked for them. I for one would like to
know what happens if we unionize and quit or lose our job.
Would it be like other unions where our name would then be placed
on the 'Out of Work List,' and we then wait our turn down at the
union hall or at home by the phone, and then go where the union
sends us? Would unionization virtually eliminate
"juice"? Being a long time dealer in Vegas this
situation would be unacceptable to me.
I still have a few good years left and I have to hang on longer
than I should just for the health insurance...(but that's a fight
for another time and with a much larger adversary, Uncle Sam).
I'm a good dealer and well respected in my profession. My
contacts are many and widespread, most of them were once fellow
dealers who have climbed the corporate ladder. Vegas is
Juice. And in most cases juice is hard earned respect and a
just reward in a profession where there are few rewards left.
It wouldn't matter what my hourly wage were if I was unable to go
out and get the job of my own choosing, or "put in a good
word" for a friend or relative in need.
We all want the same thing here. Both sides,
dealers-pro and dealers-no, want more money, better working
conditions, and a little respect in a workplace that would not
even BE a casino without us! Just because someone is not in
favor of this particular union should not
label them a "brown-noser" and "favor seeker"
working for the casino. I'm sure there are some of those
around too but hey what's one more opinion? Its just that.
One more opinion. It can't hurt us. In the end we all
vote for ourselves and for our own reasons and the majority will
rule.
This presidential election should be a sign to all of us.
Your vote really does matter, it could be just that close.
So speak up or shut-up as Grandpa used to say.
I vote to vote!
