Soon you will be given the opportunity to choose whether
you want to continue making your own choices and decisions, or
whether you are going to allow strangers to make those choices and
decisions for you. It is that basic.
Although you will get to vote and voice your opinion on the
issues that the union will present to your employer, the popular
vote may not always turn out the way you voted. The issues
that were important to you may get swept under the table and
forgotten.
You may choose a union to represent you who in turn might
get you a couple of extra perks that really aren't important to
you, while bargaining away some of the benefits that are.
We, the dealers, have traditionally been transient
employees. We move about from casino to casino for a variety
of personal reasons from improving our income, to just having a
change of scenery or the excitement of opening up a new casino.
Our independence has allowed us the opportunity to make the
choices that best suit our own personal situation. With a
union this mobility becomes a little more complicated as you would
have to go through them instead of directly to the employer.
Once our industry becomes unionized, you cease to be an
individual. You become part of a group where it is decided
that everyone in that group gets the same thing. Is that
really what you want?
Your first taste of this experience will be when it comes
time to vote on whether or not you want this representation.
You will be forced to accept whatever the group decides. The
decision is made on 50% plus one vote. In other words, only
half of the dealers that vote (NOT half of all the dealers in
town) plus one will decide your fate. Are you willing to let
your choice lose by one vote? Be sure to cast your ballot
if/when this issue comes to an election.
