To all my fellow dealers in Las Vegas:

My name is Robert Harrington. I am a dealer at the LV Hilton on swing shift. I would like to point out a few benefits of being union vs. being non-union. If you work 6 or 7 days, or more, consecutively, the casino can circumvent paying you overtime if it does not fall within the pay period of that week. If you are union the 6th day is time and a half and the 7th day is double time, regardless how it falls in the pay period. If you work 2 hours overtime on, say, Tuesday and you go home early on Wednesday, without the union you would lose the 2 hours OT. With the union, overtime is paid as overtime, as it should be, regardless of whether or not you go home early later in the week.

We dealers have to maintain our shirts, which is considered a uniform. In the union the employer must furnish you with a clean uniform every day at their expense. If they cannot, and you are union, they must compensate you every day for the cost of cleaning. If you get written up for something and they tell you to sign it, you must sign it and you have no recourse. Sure, you can go to human resource which is simply the "good-old-buddy" system, where management just stands by each other  and you are stuck with a warning or suspension or even termination.

You have no due process. If you were union you receive representation at a grievance procedure and even arbitration when monetary loss is involved. Stop and ask yourself how many dealers you see return to work after a suspension or termination with all back pay. I daresay, not many. Then ask yourself how many union people have you seen over the years---porters, cocktails, bartenders, cooks, and maids---get their jobs back or come back from suspension with all back pay reinstated. It would be nice to have someone on our side for a change.

This is only a small portion of what goes on. I would have to type all day to list all the differences between being union vs. non-union. So please wake up, the time is now. Vote union. Sign a TWU card today. This is our future and your family's future. Protect them now. Thanks.
