Stress This!

By Jack M. Lipsman

Keep that smile on your face, dammit!

In what every dealer in Nevada already knows, author Sally Field, in her new book: "100 Best Careers in Casinos and Casino Hotels," states emphatically that the pressure-cooker atmosphere of shift-working gaming dealers who must always be on, is associated with elevated stress-causing heart attacks, colds, high blood pressure and a host of other maladies.

Dr. James Anthony, who runs the UMC Quick Care Center here in Las Vegas, supports Field's assertion that dealer's jobs are rife with stress. He explains that the regimented casino environment, several layers of bosses working nearby and monitoring activity, frequently changing shifts and the second-hand smoke that fills the gambling halls means that the gaming dealer will often suffer from stress-related illnesses.

Whether or not casino related stress can ever be reduced is an open question, but certainly there should be a more responsible and honest evaluation of the connection between dealers stress levels and the determination that many illnesses may be job-related.
