Bulletin & Dealer's Issues
BULLETIN
Casino Dealers of the
Midwest…Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana and all
neighboring states…
In the gaming industry, casino dealers have always been at the
bottom of the food chain in terms of working conditions, job
security and benefits. We, at the NCDA* have been fighting this
battle in Nevada since 1989 with only partial success. The gaming
bosses are very well heeled, politically connected and zealous in
their quest to maximize profits any way they can.
That usually means squeezing casino dealers as much as they can
and giving them back as little as possible.
That is why the NCDA is now embarking on a campaign to go
national. We intend to pull together casino dealers NATIONWIDE
into local affiliated labor organizations under one national
banner. This year we will be changing our name to the National
Casino Dealers Association.
Our goal is to promote and improve working conditions, job
security and benefits for all casino dealers and to establish
standards for casinos to follow in the treatment of casino
workers.
As individuals or small groups this would be an impossible task.
But by coming together into a national organization we can
succeed. Your first step should be to contact us. All contacts are
absolutely private and confidential. Tell us where you work and
how many dealers work in your casino. Tell us about your working
conditions and benefits as well as any special problems you are
experiencing in your workplace. If you wish to make copies of this
bulletin for additional
distribution you are free to do so.**
We would like to hear from you. Contact us at:

DEALER ISSUES
Second
Hand Smoke:
No policy or rules to deal with 2nd hand smoke from abusive or
negligent customer.
Gamers oppose law revision to restrict casino smoke (as it is
restricted in restaurants).
Gamers resist use of state-of-the-art equipment to minimize smoke.
Abuse of the legislative process, unlawful practices:
Casinos have unlimited lobbying money.
Collusion by gamers in industry-wide wage freeze policy through
Nevada Resort Association
and "one-on-one" casino management contacts.
Targeting:
Casinos target dealers for discipline and termination based on an
unlawful age policy and for
objecting to unfair policies.
Tip Protection:
Gamers use dealer's tips to subsidize other workers.
Resorts lobby to prevent improvement of law to protect dealer's
tips.
At-Will-Firing:
Casinos terminate dealers without explanation; then lobby against
change in law to prevent
arbitrary firing.
Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS):
Casinos vehemently oppose establishing connection between RMS and
dealing. They
engage in widespread denial of workman's comp claims for RMS.
Casino management takes no steps to minimize effects of RMS.
Other Workman's Comp Abuses:
Respiratory illnesses caused by employment are automatically
dismissed as not job related
by casino management. Medical opinions that claim a job connection
are fought.
Fair Hearing:
Casinos deny fair hearing for dealers when customer claims
"rudeness." No meaningful
recourse is available.
Sick Time:
None allowed!
Work Rules:
Casinos impose arbitrary work rules, no discussion allowed.
Dealers have no input in the
formulation of workplace rules.
