Only the truth Mr. Whittimore!
To the editor:
Harvey Whittimore, the mouthpiece for the Nevada Resort
Association was quoted in the RJ (11/3: Nevada tops in smoking),
he does not ...."believe the high rate of smoking in Nevada
has anything to do with casinos." Is this guy
living on this planet, or what?
He, and his fellow casino lobbyists sweat bullets, day
after day in their endless effort to get our legislators to exempt
their beloved casinos from laws restricting smoking---lest they
impinge in any way on their profit margins. He may be within
his legal rights to lobby, but do not commit fraud by lying to the
public and saying that the high rate of smoking has nothing to do
with casinos. That's a pile of B.S. as big as the NRA lobbying
budget.
He goes on to argue that smoking is an adult-decision, and
should be accordingly respected as such. Well then, I hope he
maintains that same liberal-minded logic when discussing the
adult-decision of casino dealers to sue the pants off his
cherished casino sponsors for making their adult-decision to
promote and protect second hand smoke in their casinos to the
detriment of their own employees. And, I might add, a lawsuit very
similar to the one filed by the dealers in 1997 against eighteen
tobacco companies and still in litigation. It's coming Harvey,
it's coming!
