Four
other NLRB hearings slated

Las Vegas casino dealers' first election for
union representation since the early 1980s is set for Jan. 22.
This is the first major push to organize casino
dealers since Teamsters Local 14 won two elections to represent
dealers at the Frontier, one each in 1977 and 1981, but a contract
was never signed.
The renewed push was spurred by the desire to
increase their typical $6 per hour wages and ensure job security.
The Transport Workers Union of America began
the early stages of the organizing process in September and filed
its first election petition with the National Labor Relations
Board earlier this month.
The Tropicana and the Transport Workers union
waived a hearing with the National Labor Relations Board after
agreeing on the type of workers to be included in the bargaining
unit, and scheduled the January election, said Timothy Grandfield,
Transport Workers' director of organizing.
He said the Tropicana approved all 180
employees the union proposed to be included in the appropriate
bargaining unit.
"I think it's good for the casino and good
for us," Grandfield said about the agreement. "It's all
about a contract for the employees. And I believe that everybody's
sincere in their efforts."
Steve Womser, deputy regional attorney for the
National Labor Relations Board, said he could not confirm the
election date because he had not yet seen an agreement between the
parties. But Jessica Berg, a spokeswoman from the Tropicana's San
Francisco-based public relations firm, confirmed the agreement.
She declined further comment.
Grandfield said the union is also negotiating
the size of the bargaining unit at the Monte Carlo. If the
negotiations are successful an NLRB hearing scheduled between the
two sides for 10 this morning could also be waived.
An NLRB hearing between the union and the Las
Vegas Hilton is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday. Grandfield said
hearings before the NLRB are also scheduled for three other
casinos: the Luxor on Dec. 6, Riviera Dec. 7 and Stratosphere Dec.
12.
The NLRB's Womser confirmed all but the
Stratosphere hearing.
Next week petitions for election will be filed
on behalf of dealers at Bally's, New York-New York and MGM Grand,
Grandfield said.
