Union would help
To the editor:
In his comments reporting in your June 21 story on a
new national dealers union, Vince Eade, the UNLV Gaming Professor
wants to know, "what the union will improve," in the way
of working conditions. Fact, however, are stubborn things. They
tend to surface in spite of ignorance. I have been a casino dealer
for many years and I take vigorous exception to the professor's
statements. I have a strong feeling that a dealer's union is
exactly what this industry needs.
Maybe if Mr. Eade stood at a 21 table for a few hours breathing
second hand smoke instead of oxygen, he'd know how a union could
help us!
Or, maybe if his pay was frozen at the minimum wage level for 12
years, he'd know!
Or, maybe if he suffered the pain of a job induced injury, like
carpal tunnel syndrome, and had his boss deny his claim, he'd
know!
Or, maybe if he was harassed, and when voicing a complaint about
it, he was fired, with no reason given and no recourse allowed.
Then he'd know!
Or, maybe if he was forced to work on the extra board for 2 or 3
years without medical insurance and one of his kids got real sick,
then certainly, he would know!
Surely Mr. Eade should know that when he makes statements that he
presents as factual and are shown to be false, he will destroy his
credibility…had it ever existed in the first place.
Yes, it is a strange luxury to be blissfully
ignorant of the facts --- and then still be allowed to comment on
how great dealers are being treated. Maybe Mr. Eade should
transfer to the English Department….where he could teach
"Alice in Wonderland," and then Mr. Badillo, with 42
years of gaming experience, could teach his class instead.
