On
Aug. 1, 2001, we are changing our name to the International
Union of Gaming Employees, the IUGE, to better reflect our new
roll on the labor scene. Previously, as the NFGE / NCDA we
assisted gaming employees, mainly casino dealers, with advice
and advocacy on workplace issues. We lobbied for better
legislation and championed many causes, including the landmark
lawsuit we filed on behalf of casino dealers against the big
tobacco companies, which, by the way, is still ongoing.
In our new expanded role we become a full-fledged
parent union with the capability of chartering gaming locals
in Las Vegas, and throughout the country. Also, the IUGE will
have affiliations with other labor organizations in the
gaming, entertainment and hospitality fields throughout the
world.
The difference between a union and a nonunion
labor organization is that a union can require a company to
negotiate with them for a legally binding contract to achieve
better working conditions and benefits for the workers. On
the other hand, a nonunion labor organization that has not
received the endorsement of a majority of the workers cannot
negotiate on their behalf, nor can they expect or require
employers to engage in negotiations with them.
So, that is the challenge. If you want a voice in your
workplace, it will not be handed to you on a silver platter,
you will have to work for it. We can and will help with our
extensive knowledge in gaming, but in the
end, it is really up to you. The success of the IUGE in this
new roll will call for major effort and an absolute dedication
on our part. But it is not only us; it will require equal
effort and dedication from the gaming employees who want a
voice in their workplace and choose to organize to get it.
The key is SOLIDARITY!
