The Tropicana's dealers voted in favor of representation by the Transport Workers Union of America by a better-than two-to-one margin Monday, the union's first victory after two defeats in its effort to organize the city's casino table game dealers.

National Labor Relations Board voting monitor Charlotte Benford said the representation election's official count was 112-51; 174 dealers were eligible to vote.

Transport Workers Director of Organization Tim Grandfield said the city's dealers were the real winners of the Tropicana's election.

"They realize these elections are about the security of having a contract," Grandfield said. "It's a relief for the dealers in town. The Trop's dealers recognized the importance of a contract."

Tropicana spokeswoman Jessica Berg, said management was disappointed with the outcome of the election but wouldn't speculate on why the dealers voted for representation.

"We respect our dealers' decision," Berg said after the vote was tallied. If the Tropicana's lawyers don't object to the election, the vote would be certified in five days, with collective bargaining between the resort and the union to follow, Berg said.

The Tropicana is owned by Arizona-based Aztar Corp., which also operates casinos in Atlantic City, Missouri and Indiana.

Monte Carlo dealers rejected the union's representation 294-98 on Jan. 13. The union filed an NLRB complaint against the mega resort Jan. 16, alleging management threats intended to scare employees out of voting in favor of the Transport Workers.

Mandalay Resort Group, the operator and 50 percent owner of the Monte Carlo, denied the charge.  Las Vegas Hilton dealers voted 158-87 against the union Saturday.

Stratosphere and MGM Grand dealers are to vote on representation Saturday. Subsequent votes are scheduled at the Riviera on Feb. 9, Bally's on Feb. 10 and New York-New York on Feb. 17.
