Dealers Union Ready to Fight
By Rolando Larraz, Las Vegas Tribune

The International Union of Gaming Employees (IUGE) has filed an initiative with the Nevada Secretary of State in an attempt to stop employers from taking the tips of their employees.

During a visit to the Las Vegas Tribune office, Tony Badillo, President of IUGE, explained that the need for the petition drive was necessary after numerous attempts were made though the courts; the legislature, the state bureaucracy, and the media were systematically blocked by the gaming industry.

“This initiative will make it unlawful for an employer to arbitrarily take his employees’ tips. This vote will go directly to the people of Nevada and bypass these branches of government who are in the pockets of the special interests groups,” stated Badillo.

IUGE has created a branch of the union to Prevent Employers to Seizure Tip, otherwise known as PEST. The initiative was created to gather citizen’s support for a change of Nevada statues.

The issue was precipitated and made most urgent by Steve Wynn’s September 1, 2006 edict to confiscate 20% of the tips earned by Wynn Resorts casino dealers.

“We are not going to play politics any longer. In this state the legislature, the courts and the state bureaucracy are afraid to make decisions against the gaming industry,” said Badillo.

“Let the citizens of Nevada decide if Mr. Wynn is doing the right thing by confiscating his employees’ tips by skimming 20% of their hard-earned money to pay the salary of his floormen,” he added.

Badillo also wants to alert the dealers in their casinos not to make the mistake of thinking that this problem is limited and exclusive to Wynn Las Vegas casino dealers.

Badillo believes that Wynn’s tip policy will undoubtedly affect all tip-earners no matter what their service industry tip-earning profession may be, not only in Nevada but also throughout  the country, if not stopped.

PEST completely acknowledges and supports the ongoing union negotiations and legal actions in progress and will be working toward the same goal of preventing employers from seizing tips with no interference from other projects in progress, explained Badillo.

Badillo insists that it is important that people support this petition by visiting the petition-gathering booths throughout the city and signing the petitions.

The collection of signatures will begin immediately and will be carried out mainly by an army of tip-earner voluntaries, as well as members of the IUGE.
