Your letter to the IUGE dated June 19, 2009 announces that the UniteHere Locals “are not getting involved with any protest.”

Although the IUGE supports and will be present for the July 6 & 7 protest you mention, we did not organize it. That was done by TWU Local 721.

Our question to you is:

Why would a union official, with a large majority of its members being tip earners, oppose participation in a protest event whose goal is to protect tips from confiscation by greedy employers?

The IUGE is confounded by your position. Both your position and that of the Culinary Local 226 defies understanding. After all, most of your members are largely tip earners.

It is you and your members who should be out protesting and waving signs and screaming your defiance against the injustice of employers who deviously plot to destroy workers income.

Rest assured that many of the members of UniteHere Locals will be accessing this controversy on our website and through our mailing lists.
